The Story of Noelle & Wallace

Charlie's barking cut through the pre-dawn quiet at exactly 5:45 AM. Noelle Thompson rolled over and groaned into her pillow. Her goldendoodle had spotted the squirrel again—the one that lived in the oak tree across from their Hayes Valley apartment.

"Charlie, seriously?" Noelle whispered, already knowing it was futile. She'd planned to sleep until 6:30, but now that she was up, she might as well make use of the early start.

Twenty minutes later, she was jogging through the quiet streets with Charlie trotting happily beside her. The fog was rolling in thick today, making the familiar route feel almost mystical. As they rounded the corner near Lafayette Park, Charlie suddenly veered off course, tangling his leash with another runner's legs.

"Charlie, no!" Noelle called out, mortified as both she and the stranger tried to untangle the enthusiastic dog. "I'm so sorry, he's usually better behaved."

"No harm done," the man said, laughing as Charlie attempted to shower him with affection. "Dogs have a way of keeping us humble, don't they?"

There was something kind about his voice that made Noelle relax slightly. "They really do. I'm Noelle, and this social butterfly is Charlie."

"Wallace," he replied, giving Charlie a final pat. "I think I've seen you two around here before. Same running schedule?"

"Usually about an hour later," Noelle admitted. "Someone," she glanced at Charlie, "had other ideas today."

"Well, the early shift has its perks. The fog's beautiful this time of morning." Wallace checked his watch. "I should keep going, but maybe I'll see you both around?"

"Probably depends on Charlie's squirrel surveillance schedule," Noelle joked.

As Wallace continued his run with a friendly wave, Noelle watched him disappear into the fog. She hadn't noticed until then how the mist had lifted slightly, the morning sun beginning to break through.

"Come on, trouble," she tugged Charlie's leash gently. "We've got a long day ahead."

Back at her apartment, showered and halfway through her first cup of coffee, Noelle opened her laptop to review her presentation one last time. The email notification that popped up made her freeze:

SUBJECT: RE: Today's Board Presentation - URGENT CHANGES REQUIRED FROM: Marcus Chen, CTO TIME: 5:47 AM

*Noelle - Critical security concerns have emerged. The entire direction needs to be reconsidered. Come see me immediately when you get in.*

Her coffee suddenly felt cold in her hands. Six months of work, a full board presentation prepared, and now this? Noelle glanced at the clock - 7:15 AM. Whatever was waiting for her at TechFlow, she had less than an hour to face it.
